We live in a very prosperous nation. But there are huge disparities in wealth, and there is way too much poverty and hunger. According to a study undertaken by Food Banks Canada, there was a 26% increase in food bank usage between 2008 and 2011. Over 850,000 people accessed a food bank during an average month in 2011, and 38% of those were children and youth. (Food Banks Canada (2011). HungerCount 2011. Toronto: Food Banks Canada.)
The Chicken Farmers of Canada have been hosting the Canada Day Great Canadian Chicken BBQ on Parliament Hill for the past 20 years. This year they are adding a twist – a contest for MPs to win a donation to a local food bank in their riding. For the “Everyone Wins with Chicken!” contest, MPs are being asked to submit their favourite chicken breast sandwich recipe. The top recipe will win the MP a $10,000 donation to their local foodbank. Two runners-up will receive a $5000 and a $2500 donation.
In addition, the winning recipe will have the honour of being served on Canada Day to 10,000 people attending the 20th Annual Great Canadian Chicken BBQ. And, all submitted MP recipes will be included in a downloadable digital cookbook. Do you want to know how your MP likes their chicken? Please encourage your MP to enter!
You can find a listing of all the MPs, with their Twitter handles where available, here. And if you aren’t sure which riding you are in, there is a link to the Government of Canada website where you can enter your postal code to find out. My MP isn’t on Twitter, so I will send an email to her, but I’ll be tweeting to my neighbouring MP as well.
Not sure what to tweet? Here’s a sample you can use:
